The Tow Foundation has a special interest in programs that serve youth involved in the juvenile justice system in Connecticut. The foundation makes grants primarily in Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut. We fund programs that offer the best prospects for improving the lives of youth in trouble with the law. These programs include aftercare services, gender-specific services for girls, mental health treatment, arts therapy, vocational training, social skills training, parental skill building and educational enrichment. The foundation also supports advocacy initiatives on behalf of the juvenile justice population. One of the foundation’s goals is to encourage communication and collaboration among public and private providers to advance creative solutions that address the problems associated with juvenile crime and incarceration .
When evaluating potential grants, preference is shown for organizations with excellent funding prospects to continue and improve current program services and for well-conceived new projects. The foundation encourages the use of challenge or matching grants and is receptive to collaborative efforts. As a general rule, multiple-year grants will be considered only for prior grantees. In recent years, The Tow Foundations grants have ranged from $5,000 to $50,000.
