In addition to its major grantmaking in the areas of juvenile justice, social services and advocacy, the Tow family has a personal interest in breakthrough medical research, the arts, and educational institutions with which they have had long standing relationships.

The following is a brief list of the family’s
major commitments in recent years. The Tow Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals to fund similar projects at other institutions.

Arnold P. Gold Foundation, Englewood, NJ
To endow the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Awards presented annually to a graduating medical student and an outstanding faculty member who serves as a role model at approximately 80 of the nation’s 126 medical schools. This award was created to recognize those who excel at patient care, as well as at science.

Barnard College, New York, NY
To provide public service internships designed to expose students to opportunities and challenges related to the work of nonprofit and non-governmental organizations in social service, health, human rights, education, arts, science and related fields. Also, to provide travel study grants for students who want to travel abroad to pursue their studies, learn foreign languages or conduct research.

Brooklyn College Foundation, Brooklyn, NY
To create the Tow Professorships, which are awarded to scholars and artists of national reputation, and to provide travel stipends and travel fellowships that enable members of the faculty to pursue research projects, collaborate with colleagues, work at research institutes, and undertake fieldwork in the United States and abroad. They also fund travel stipends for upper-division students who want to travel abroad to pursue their studies, learn foreign languages or conduct research.

Brooklyn College Foundation, Brooklyn, NY
To create the Claire Tow Distinguished Teaching Award, to be given each year to an outstanding faculty member.

Brooklyn College Foundation, Brooklyn, NY
Pledge toward a new Center for the Performing Arts, which will be housed in a new building that will offer rehearsal and performance space, set design and construction workshops, exhibition space, a 200-seat theater, as well as classroom, meeting and reception rooms. The Tow Center will further the College’s commitment to performing and visual arts.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY
For the construction of the Claire Tow Pediatric Oncology Outpatient Facility, and to endow the Claire Tow Chair in Pediatric Oncology. The establishment of the facility along with the Chair strengthens the Center’s ability to offer the most technologically sophisticated therapies to children in a warm and caring environment.

Young Concert Artists, New York, NY
To provide support each year for the Claire Tow Debut Award and concert at the 92nd Street Y. This award is given to a winner, chosen by Claire, of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and funds the launch of the career of an extraordinary young musician.
