Did the ALS ice bucket challenge take attention away from other, worthy charities?

Dec 29, 2014

By: Gwen Ifill

WNYC’s Gwen Ifill discusses the rise of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with Nancy Frates, an ALS Association board member and mother of the inspiration behind the viral phenomenon, ALS patient Pete Frates. Frates discusses the importus for the challenge’s creation, and the ALS community’s reaction to and use of the $220 million generated by the campaign. She also addresses the public concern that the popularity of the Ice Bucket Challenge harmed other non-profits’ mobilization efforts by detracting attention from their causes.
