The Innocence Project (IP) works to exonerate wrongfully convicted individuals and reform criminal justice systems to prevent future injustice. Since its start in 1992, 354 wrongful convictions have been overturned by the IP, including 38 people who pled guilty to crimes they did not commit, and 20 people who were sentenced to death. Thanks to its success, the IP has sparked a rise in organizations doing similar work. Funding from The Tow Foundation will be used to strengthen The Network Support Unit (NSU), an IP department created to provide structure and governance to the growing network of peer organizations working in the field.
