This grant provides general operating support for Freedom Reads, a new organization based on the timeless notion that everyone has the right to read, to learn and to express their ideas. Its primary focus is bringing a million books into prisons and juvenile detention centers across this country, one 500-book “Freedom Library” at a time. In 2022, it also plans to launch Freedom Library Fellowship and Literary Ambassador programs to bring incarcerated readers together with writers and provide opportunities for those returning home from prison.
