The University at Buffalo School of Law was founded in 1887 and is SUNY’s only law school. Its Advocacy Institute serves as host to the law school’s programs in trial advocacy, appellate advocacy and mediation. This grant provides support for the Advocacy Institute’s Parole Reform Initiative, which pushes for legislative reforms and develops litigation strategies to change the way parole hearings are conducted. In addition, staff attorneys collaborate with students to represent incarcerated people in their discretionary parole hearings and on appeal if they are denied. This project has the potential to increase the number of opportunities for people to have a second chance at life outside of prison through a fairer parole system in NY.
