This funding provides general operating support for Good Call, a technology-based criminal justice nonprofit started in 2016 to provide New Yorkers with immediate access to free legal support, especially at the point of arrest. It operates a 24/7 free emergency hotline (1-833-3-GOODCALL) staffed by four licensed attorneys with experience handling criminal matters that people can call from police stations or jail after being arrested. An advocacy team distributes pamphlets, posters, stickers and business cards with the hotline number outside court houses, housing projects, social justice events, rallies and other places and provides Know Your Rights information to community members. Good Call also operates an internship program for youth of color ages 17 to 25, many with justice involvement, that provides hands-on work experience in community organizing, campaigns and technology.
