Founded in 2016, The Women’s Community Justice Association (WCJA) is committed to improving the lives of women touched by the justice system and address the trauma they experience before, during and after incarceration. It also identifies and develops the current and next generation of community leaders, activists and storytellers to advance a better future for women. WCJA advocates for the decarceration of women, including transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals, and improved conditions in women’s prisons and jails in NYC and statewide. This grant provides general operating support for WCJA and its two short-term goals: a reduction in the number of women in jail or prison in NYC and statewide and the closure of Rosie’s, the women’s jail on Rikers Island.
